The predominant source of energy today is fossil fuels such as coal and oil reserves across the globe. These materials have accumulated over millions of years, and are not something that we can replace or procure from somewhere else. This means that once we run out of these reserves, we are out for good.
This is why it is important to invest in technology that can harvest renewable sources of energy such as sunlight and wind. These resources, especially sunlight, is plentiful in most places on earth and there are technologies to use it to produce energy in a manner that is clean and pollution free.
Many energy companies are attempting to invest in and use sustainable sources of energy along with more traditional sources, but the percentage is very low, which means most of the energy we use as society comes from oil. So whether it is business gas and electricity or domestic energy, it is important to know that conserving energy is a shared responsibility.
Energy comes from oil, and oil is a precious resource. Every time a light bulb is left on needlessly, it is equivalent to wasting oil that took millions of years to be created. Every time the engine of a car is left running needlessly, it's the same thing.
In this light, when we consider the amount of energy that is needed to support the modern way of life, it seems insane not to reduce our dependence on energy and especially our dependence on fossil fuels.
